Bloody Skies: Redesign

Bloody Skies: Redesign

Speculative jacket design for Thomas McKelvey Cleaver's history of the "Forgotten Fifteenth."

Role: Editorial Design

The Fifteenth Air Force's story centers on the punishing bomber runs over Romania's oil fields, so I built the cover around a B-17 cutting through a contrail-streaked sky. The contrails add motion and altitude while hinting at the danger closing in around the formation. A deep red gradient washes over the scene, tying back to the title itself and giving the cover more urgency than a straight blue-sky photograph would allow. For the type, I pulled from vintage Army Air Corps poster lettering: bold and condensed to root the design in the era. Inside the jacket flaps, I layered a period map of the 15th Fighter Command's Italian air bases, giving readers a grounded sense of place before they even open the book.
