My goal for this redesign was to capture the colors of Florence and create a sense of historical texture. A purple-red washes over a photo of dome, extending around the full cover as a nod to the impact Brunelleschi had on the entire city and not just the dome itself. A fleur-de-lis, the city's own civic emblem, anchors the design as a quiet mark of place. Running across the front and back is one of da Vinci's sketches of Brunelleschi's hoisting machines, a nod to the ingenuity that made the impossible possible, and a reminder that this is as much an engineering story as an architectural one. The pairing of rich, painterly color with the technical sketch is meant to echo the book's central tension: an artist solving a problem no engineer of his time could.
