Speculative jacket design for the story of Shackleton's Antarctic expedition

Role: Editorial Design

Most editions lean on the famous nighttime photograph of the ship lit up against the dark, so I wanted to go the opposite direction: a daytime image that conjures adventure and heroism rather than dread. The title treatment echoes the ship's own nameplate, a beveled brass look accented with a nautical star, with the letters worn and damaged to suggest survival and the passage of time rather than pristine heroics. On the back, a photograph of the crew grounds the story in the people who lived it, not just the ship itself.
