Starman

Speculative cover redesign for the story of the first man in space

My main focus for this redesign was to capture a sense of optimism and hope that I felt could have been pushed further from the original cover design. I referenced 60s Soviet posters for inspiration, aiming to combine bright colors, space-age vectors, and a heroic image, but in a way that didn't feel overly derivative of Soviet-era design cues.

A smiling photo of Yuri is the centerpiece, with a streaking vector curving around him into space, with a subtle Vostok 1 rocket silhouette floating in space. The colors are meant to replicate the gradient pattern of the edge of where Earth meets space, with stars dotting the sky.

I also made a motion version of the cover, with the vector, rocket, stars, and subtitle fading into view.
